Miller PAPR Gen 1 vs Gen 2: the 287178 / 244131 battery trap
LAST UPDATED 2026-07-04
If you own a Miller PAPR and need a battery, there is one fact to get right before spending anything: Miller’s PAPR batteries are not interchangeable across generations. Distributors state explicitly that the Gen 2 battery 287178 is designed exclusively for the Generation 2 (PAPR II) blower and does not fit Generation 1 blowers — Gen 1 requires the 244131. Order the wrong one and you own an expensive battery that doesn’t click into your unit.
Identify your generation first
- Gen 1 (original Miller PAPR): uses battery 244131 (~8 h runtime, ~3 h charge) with charger 244132. An intermediate battery 282076 (charger 282077) also exists in this family. A battery-contact repair kit (269930) was offered for Gen 1 units with worn contacts. Gen 1 system record →
- Gen 2 (PAPR II): uses battery 287178 (~8 h) with charger 282077, blower assembly 287172, and 287170-series HEPA filters. Sold with the T94i-R flip-front and hard-hat headtops. Gen 2 system record →
If you’re unsure which you have: the PAPR II branding appears on Gen 2 blowers, and Miller’s official product pages for 287178 (“PAPR 2 Blower Battery”) and 244131 are separate listings — check your blower’s model plate against the system it shipped with.
Why this matters beyond convenience
Both batteries are manufacturer-listed parts — but only for their own generation (see how we label compatibility). A NIOSH approval covers a specific tested configuration; a battery from the wrong generation isn’t part of your system’s approval even if a future adapter made it physically attach. And if your Gen 1 unit’s 244131 is unavailable, the honest answer may be that the unit is at end of life — factor a full replacement against hunting old stock.
Data status
Miller’s website blocks automated verification, so our Miller records are currently labelled audit-supported: the official product pages exist and are indexed as described, and the generation incompatibility is distributor-confirmed. We’ll upgrade these records to fully verified once checked against Miller’s manuals directly — the labels on each part record always show the current evidence level.
